Fierce, natural hair-inspired, great, fun, must-have pieces are some of the adjectives to describe the work of our Art Attack! featured artist Sharee Miller. The above mother and daughter piece will definitely be hanging on my walls soon as it is an absolute favourite of mine. We got that chance to chat a bit with Sharee and know a bit more about her.
Tell us a bit about yourself and how you became an artist?
I grew up in a very artistic family. Both my sisters drew, my mother made clothes, and my father made furniture as a hobby. I remember growing up placing paper on the tv so we could trace our favorite characters and I would enter all the art competitions I knew about. Art was always my favorite class and everyone noticed so in Jr High I was able to give up gym for more art classes and in Highschool I gave up JROTC and Advance Placement English for Advance Placement art classes. I even had after school art classes so of course when I graduated I went to an art college. I attended Pratt Institute for 4 years and received my BFA in Communication Design in 2012. But with all this talk about classes I wouldn’t say I was taught to do art I would say I was taught how to use what was already in me. There is nothing else in this world that I would rather be able to do.
What inspires you and your work? And how do your pieces come together?
I get most of the humer from my own natural hair experience but I am also inspired everyday by living in New York where the natural hair movement is very prevalent. I see beautiful and cute things everyday and I just want to draw them. I especially love Pinterest for all the images it has to offer. I just take in fashion and illustration and hairstyles and my mind puts them all together. I like to see something and think what if it were like this or what if it had a pattern or if this idea was pushed to an extreme. I’m constantly writing all these things down so when I get home I can sit down and draw and paint because tomorrow there will be new ideas and experiences.
Who is your favourite artist of all time and which piece of their work?
I never reflect on one artist for to long because I just love being inspired by new things but my curent favorite Artist is Geninne. She is an artist in mexico who paints these beautiful birds with amazing patterns and she currently inspires me everyday. I check her blog daily and it makes me want to paint. Though our subject matter is completely different it gives me a feeling I want to convey with my art. You just want to keep looking at it and you want to take it home. I think everyone should check out her blog: http://blogdelanine.blogspot.com/
What advice would you give to anyone wanting to pursue their talent of art?
I would say don’t get distracted by how other people work and never think you are doing it wrong. I used to feel like that and its so freeing to do something and feel confident that this is how you work and this is how YOU bring YOUR art into the world. Never create for anyone else (unless its your job) always make what you want to see. Even when art does become a job like it did for me just find a way to keep making what you want and it will never become work. That is why I started my blog to make something for me and express where I am at in my life right now with no restrictions, rules or deadlines. It just feels good to not want to go to bed because you want to stay up painting.
What does the future hold for you and your work?
My main dream has always been to do children books and right now I am looking into licensing because I make art so it can be out in the world. I want someone to take it to school or hang it in their house or read it to their children. That is the art I enjoy and that is the art I want to make.
Tell us any 3 fun facts about yourself.
Lets see…I could eat french fries for every meal if no one would judge me!
I can sing most of the songs I’ve ever heard from musicals or cartoons or even a good comercial jingle.
I was raised on St. Thomas (an island in the US Virgin Islands) but I have no accent.

Today, I went to the beachfront with my kids. I found a sea
shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said
“You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She
put the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched
her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is entirely off topic but I
had to tell someone!
