Dear 2024,
This is the first year since 2019 that I haven’t been pregnant or post-partum—and thank goodness for that!
The year started on an even keel. My career was thriving, family and friendships were solid—everything felt great. Then, midway through the year, everything shifted. An unexpected transition threw me into a chapter of uncertainty as I navigated life post-contract. Without a fixed title or organisation to anchor me, I leaned into my personal brand, turning challenges into opportunities. Speaking engagements became my lifeline, and I was on a plane nearly every other week, sharing insights on energy, sustainability, and just transitions in Africa. Speaking at the United Nations and meeting powerhouse women like Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, made the whirlwind all the more magical.
Amidst this journey, I continued to contribute through existing roles while embracing exciting new prospects. As a Governor at the University of Aberdeen and a member of the University Court, I deepened my commitment to advancing education and sustainability, ensuring energy transitions and inclusion stayed central to our discussions.
Professionally, stepping back into consulting pushed me to stretch my boundaries. It was an opportunity to leverage my expertise in mobilising private sector investment across diverse sectors, rediscovering my knack for creating innovative solutions in agriculture, climate finance, and health, all while facilitating sustainable job creation. In a fun twist, I had a nostalgic “Third World Profashional” moment when I was invited to Côte d’Ivoire to speak on attracting development financing for the creative economy, drawing on my past success as a lifestyle blogger.
Every step reminded me why I do this work and the lasting legacies I am building.
I also reconnected with my love for storytelling. Whether through the Celebrating Women campaign, which spotlighted my advocacy for gender equity in Africa, or writing deeply personal reflections, I found joy in sharing stories that resonated. One article I wrote in April on the luxury of slowing down, felt almost prophetic. Little did I know how much this year would teach me to embrace a gentler pace of life.
The true highlights of my year, however, revolved around my family. Watching my daughters grow brought immense joy. For the first time in their lives, I took a proper vacation with them—no work involved. We spent four glorious weeks in Europe with my mother, later joined by the rest of my family. That time of rest and reconnection stands out as one of the brightest moments of my year.
As I work toward new opportunities, I am reminded that every “no” paves the way for the right “yes.” Although the journey hasn’t been easy, the possibilities ahead fill me with hope and excitement.
2024, you’ve taught me to find peace in uncertainty, celebrate myself in moments of doubt, and embrace the fullness of life. Thank you for the growth, the connections, and the courage to keep moving forward.
Here’s to 2025—may it be bold, bright, and filled with success.
Warmly,
Adaku
