Oomph! Winter is coming. The one season that can indeed be very disruptive to people’s exercise routines. Even the most dedicated fitness enthusiast can have a hard time in winter. Cold days and long nights make it hard to get out of bed, let alone get the body moving for those of us living in countries with the most frightful winter weather (Oh Canada eh?). Here are some of my tips to help you remove as many obstacles as possible and make small changes that can make staying active easier until spring returns.

1. Focus on the mental health benefits- With the winter season comes the dreaded seasonal depression. Sunlight is minimal, it gets dark so early in the day. Exercise can be a huge help in coping with this drastic season. Exercising is an instant mood booster.
2. Get excited– If you’ve never been a winter fan, start focusing on what you do love about it and how this time of year provides new opportunities for your fitness and health. Set a new goal to crush in the winter. Aim to be stronger and healthier. This will help you get out of bed in the morning and leave your comfort zone to where growth happens.

3. Try something new– Winter is the perfect season to try a new indoor fitness class or sports. Reformer Pilates, Pickleball, Indoor soccer, bootcamp classes, tennis. Visit your local community centre or search online for fitness classes around you and give it a go. Not only will you learn new skills, you will meet new people and have fun while doing so.
4. Get creative at home- If the thought of bundling up on a snowy day is not your jam, then focus on getting your exercise in at home. The cold weather should not bean excuse to miss your daily exercise. Play a youtube workout video (eg Grow with Jo) or even invest in a few pieces of fitness related equipment at home. A walking pad for those long hours of work meetings while working from home, a kettlebell or 20, a jump rope. The possibilities are endless.
5. Play outside- Do you wanna build a snowman? Have a blast making snow angels and building interesting looking snowmen. No snow? Why not try out ice skating or other fun winter outdoor activities. It is a fun way to get in your cardio.
No matter what options you choose this winter, the goal is to be consistent, have fun and be safe.
